Try not to laugh, but this right here is the kitchen of my dreams. Yes, it has knotty pine cabinets, tile counter tops, parquet floors and three inch deep sink, and I love it. I love this kitchen because it is all mine*. We bought a house.
Owning a home is something I have dreamed of since middle school. Maybe that sounds weird, but I didn't grow up with a home. My single mom worked her way through a masters degree while raising 3 kids. We moved a lot. We lived in student housing, rented apartments, we even rented a little pink house once. My mom dreamed of owning a home too, but she put her children ahead of that. She finally bought a home when I was 17, and as you are at 17, I was pretty much already headed out the door.
Since I left home I've lived with my sister, in student housing (again), in a tiny apartment above someone's garage, in a tent for one summer in Seattle, in generic apartment complexes, and beautiful custom apartments. When I met my husband I was living in a tiny carriage house that we loving referred to as the Hobbit House. Together we've rented two houses, both of which we loved.
Still I was obsessed with looking at houses for sale. I even have a few home apps on my phone and subscribe to real estate listings via e-mail. One of my favorite things to do with quiet free time was looking at houses.
I always chuckle a little when I look back on how we finally got here. In most respects, we did everything backward. I stumbled into an amazing career before I even knew what a career was. We had our daughter and got married before we even knew where we wanted to make a home.
Two years ago we thought we'd take the plunge. We were disappointed by how little we could be approved for - we definitely didn't have our ducks in a row or a clue about the home buying process! We spent the last two years saving, paying down our debts, and keeping better records - all hoping to start looking at the beginning of 2014.
And then this house came on the market. I first found it through one of our home buying apps. We took a drive by and both my husband and I had a gut reaction without looking inside.
Of course, we did look inside and then fell in love. We put an offer a week to the day that we found the house.
To say we've been blessed is such an understatement. My sister-in-law is an award winning real estate agent and she gently walked us through the whole process. We've also had the benefit of renting a house close my work and my in-laws who double as affordable childcare. We've also had so much support from our friends and extend family - in the form of love and sometimes sage advice. Thank you, thank you, thank you to each and everyone of you.
I also have to give a ton of credit to my company - because both Mr. Brown and his wife have not only paid me to do something so fun and inspiring for the last 6 years, but they've also mentored me on growing up, growing a family, and building a life outside of work.
Thanks for allowing me to wax poetically about this little dream of mine. Our new home is going to allow me to do even more amazing things here - once we get settled.
I have a great series planned for the next month - while we get moved into our new home - I can't wait to share it with you next week!
*Ok, I will share it with my husband, our daughter, and our two dogs.
