Grilled Bruschetta

I'm having a fit of wants this week and wishing for inspirations and talent to miraculously be mine.

I know that strength comes in working through the wanting, in putting my head down and forging ahead. Still I want. I want to write you clever recipes and shoot beautiful photographs. But I know that even after almost 5 years doing what I do, I am still new to this career and even newer to photography and to blogging. Its hard not to look at all the other lovely sites out there and feel like I am not enough, like this space is not enough.

I wrote, styled, and shot two recipes this week that I am just not happy with and then spent the last couple days feeling a little bummed. I posted this as a note to myself on facebook this week:

{found via pinterest, original source could not be found, if you know please share!}
Its so true. I need to focus on growing myself, developing my own voice and style and I need to remember that is what this space is for. Its not for page views and ad spaces {though it helps cover some of the costs}.

I have a few projects I've been working on for other people and a new series I'm going to be starting here in June. Until then, this is an un-recipe that we had tonight before dinner. Funny how cooking without a plan and playing with my camera turned out better results than anything I tried too hard at this week.

Grilled Bruschetta
Serves 6 as an appetizer

This little-diddy goes on the grill while it heats and you eat it while dinner cooks. Its a good little trick to have in your pocket for this holiday weekend.

1 pint cherry tomatoes
1/4 cup olive oil or bacon fat
2 sprigs of thyme
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 baguette, sliced thinly

Combine the tomatoes, oil, garlic and spices in a cast iron skillet (I'm partial to this lodge piece that is pretty enough to go from grill to table). Place the skillet in the center of your preheating grill, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Toast the bread around the edge of the grill. Remove the tomatoes when the mixture is bubbling and the tomatoes are tender. Cool slightly before serving.

    1. Thanks Clare! It was totally one of those last minute ideas because we were starving and the grill was still heating!

  2. This looks amazing. I am still trying to make myself like tomatoes, it is a slow and steady process. But this recipe will definitely be a tomato tasting I'll enjoy!

    1. Thanks lady! Brian is still really opposed to tomatoes, but I find that he does a better job eating them when they are cooked (i.e. pastas and pizzas) so this was a good one for him.

  3. Oh my goodness, before I even read your post I was drooling over those stunning photos. So whatever you're doing is working (and I'm also loving the cute little fonts, as well).

And on another note, every single day I question what my goals are with my blog. On one hand, it is one of the only long term "projects" I've ever stuck to and it showed my what I want to do with my life, but on the other hand, the more time I put into it the more I wonder how the heck these other bloggers do it!? At the end of the day I think all bloggers have these same doubts.

I happen to think Stir and Scribble looks absolutely fabulous these days, and I can't wait to hear about your other projects. I'm sure they're going to be delicious!

    XOXO, Nealey

    1. Thanks Nealey! Blogging is really a labor of love, and in a way a means to an end - like you said it helped you figure out what you wanted to be do. I always have to remind myself of that and in joy the journey a little more.

  4. Can I just say that I tell myself that quote ALL THE TIME. We now have it hanging in our living room, in fact. I think we all deal with those thoughts of not being enough or comparing ourself to this blogger or that blogger (or this wife or that writer or this cook or whatever) but you're so right that we have to keep trudging along and remembering what there is to enjoy. There is real value in creating.

PS that top photo makes me want to reach into the screen.
